What are The Good Maverick Letters?
The future reminds the present of the restoration to come — an imaginative call to Christian hope in anxious days
Welcome to The Good Maverick Letters. For our purposes, these short essays will be written by a fictional visitor to the year 2025 who has been sent from the hoped-for-future-of-followers-of-Jesus (God’s Kingdom in Full Glory) with instructions to encourage, equip and empower the global Church as it resists the darkness in the days before The Renewal.
In addition to being the subtitle of a certain Top Gun movie, the word “Maverick” means “a person who thinks and acts in an independent way, often behaving differently from the expected or usual way”. A visitor from the Restored Kingdom would certainly be called a Maverick for standing out in peculiar, yet inspiring ways. And so we will call this fictional character “The Good Maverick” or “M” for short.
The stories in the letters are inspired by current events happening in the modern world, but of course they are fictional and imaginative in nature.
May the millions of followers of The Way around the world continue to affirm the Lordship and reign of Jesus Christ in this “already-but-not-yet-Kingdom” even amidst the great suffering, pain and despair many are feeling.
As N.T. Wright would say, may we be “surprised by hope” as we eagerly anticipate the Restoration and Renewal to come as Jesus works all things out for justice and hope and restoration here on earth in our today.
With hope,
